I love pits, but I think that as long as dogs are being euthanized by the thousands in shelters, all breeding of ANY dog should stop.
I would rather see a whole breed (even MANY breeds) fade away; I would rather see dogs be made such a rare treasure that only rich people with special permits or licenses be allowed to keep them, than see them slaughtered, fought, eaten, battered, raced and abandoned.
There is more at stake here than our "love" for a breed, or our "need' to have pets who love us and serve us unconditionally.
Yeah, pet ownership is GREAT for us, and therapeutic, and saves human lives yada yada....
But I am thinking that until dogs (and cats) are made expensive and rare, we fickle humans will keep breeding, and "letting" them breed for our ulterior motives (they're such perfect guard dogs, baby sitters, companions, herders, etc) and the animal shelters will have to keep slaughtering the expendable, careless, excess, of which there is a LOT.
I would hate to be without my pit (she's actually a foundling pit/akita cross) but I would gladly never have a dog again if I knew that dogs where so hard to acquire that they all were treated like family, as they deserve to be.
That being said, I know that humans are way too selfish to stop breeding animals. There's money to be made, after all, and besides, it's GOOD for the BREED (retch.....blech...fooey...)
I will keep picking up the slack, as many of us probably are doing, by adopting the abandoned dogs.
My abandoned dog of choice is the Pit Bull. But GOD... I wish that all dogs were as prized as Ferraris...I NEVER find a Ferrari wandering around loose on my street, and I know that most all the Ferraris I ever see are highly prized and well tended.
Dogs don't get that kind of respect and I think it's 'cause they're too easy to come by and even easier to let waste away.
It kills me.

It seems to take the profit incentive for breeding pits away to a greater degree.

If this is true then from the perspective of trying to reduce the number of pittys that get "put down aka killed" at shelters it sems like it is a good thing.

In terms of taking away a "Business Oppurtunity" from those who can't afford a "breeding license I just have no sympathy...do something else

Pawsitively Pit Bull is a dog rescue and sanctuary
specifically for pit bulls. We rescue abused,
abandoned, and disabled pit bulls, then rehabilitate
and rehome them. Those dogs that cannot be adopted out
or fostered remain at the sanctuary where they can
live out the rest of their lives. Other services
offered include obedience training, boarding, outreach
and education. We strive to change the negative
stereotypes of pit bulls.

This year there will be door prizes, activism
opportunities, video presentation, education and
outreach materials, adoptable dog info,
photo galleries, and an information booth.
Proceeds from this year's fund raiser will be used to
provide ongoing care for the dogs, medical services
and rehabilitation, improve the sanctuary facility,
and continue public awareness and outreach.
We are 100% funded by donations and staffed by an
Are there any other bay area hair stylists in this tribe?

THe other night, the salon I work for did a benefit for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. From 3-8, we charged $35/haircut, and 100% went to the foundation. It was such a wonderful experience, and it made me realize that hair stylists really have more power to help the world than I ever thought possible. Just think, if every salon in the US did something like that once a year...out of 280,000 salons, the possibilities are endless.

Ok, I digressed. Back on point: it felt really wonderful, and I was wondering if there were any hair stylists on here who would be interested in doing something similar for a pit bull rescue org.
